Our Website

The university’s primary marketing and communications tool is our website. All official university-supported activities should have websites on the UMass Lowell domain, uml.edu. Sites not on the UMass Lowell server are not recognized or supported by the Digital Experience team in Marketing and Communicationss.

All department, academic, administrative and research sites should be part of the web content management system managed by the Digital Experience team. A maintainer should be designated for each website and will be trained in use of the content management system.

Site Design

A university-wide template has been designed with the flexibility to organize information in a variety of ways. The template works on all platforms and devices, meets federal accessibility standards and is optimized for search engines. Each site can be customized with photos, graphics and other content to maximize impact.

Banner/Masthead Design

If your department has specific pictures or images, the web designer will make every effort to incorporate them into your page design. The designer may use stock photography if images from your department are not available. For best results, high-resolution photos with a minimum width or height of 1200 pixels are requested. Clip art is not acceptable for website use.

Subdomains

To eliminate confusion and optimize search engine rankings, the Digital Experience team does not grant new subdomains (anyname.uml.edu).

Alias Policy

An alias (also known as a redirect or short link) automatically brings users to the right place in a website by typing a shortened address (www.uml. edu/anyname). Aliases are appropriate for print publications and advertising. They can be set up at the discretion of the Digital Experience team.

Aliases should be intuitive and follow the traditional format, www.uml.edu/anyname.

For More Information

The Digital Experience team can help you determine the best alias for your project. Please submit a request to web support prior to referencing an alias in print materials or advertising to ensure that the alias is working and does not already point to a different location.
